Balgair is a lightly raced son of Australian stallion, Foxwedge (see full pedigree in ‘Pedigree’ above) and is the winner of five races notably here at Newmarket, both on the Rowley Mile and, also, on the July course. He is also a winner at Newmarket-by-the-Sea, better known as Great Yarmouth, and is a flashy chestnut who is one of the most recognisable horses in the town. A real stable favourite, he enjoys fast ground and is the perfect horse to take to the Summer festivals. Previously the winner of four races over 7f and a mile, last season, we plotted a course for him to be stepped up in trip, referred to by trainer, Tom Clover as a ‘stroke of genius’ and he duly won the Amateur riders version of the Cambridgeshire by six lengths here at Newmarket, with his owners rewarded at the princely odds of 12/1.

Having now been able to find plenty of new opportunities for him, this ideal Summer horse will be strategically placed to maximise his earnings.

Trained by Tom Clover at the historic, Kremlin House Stables, on the Fordham Road in Newmarket, he is an adorable sort and is both well built and incredibly sound. He rarely misses a day’s work (see videos in ‘Media’ above) and we’re looking forward eagerly to the new season with the prospect of running in a multitude of interesting and valuable handicaps over a variety of trips.

Tom Clover follows, the late, great Michael Jarvis, Roger Varian and Simon Crisford as the master of Kremlin House and has already made a blistering start to the new season on the all weather. With his first winner at Glorious Goodwood under his belt, Tom, together with his wife, Jackie, daughter of Arc de Triomphe winning trainer, Michael Jarvis, have an operation that is going places. Charming, welcoming and hugely hospitable, they run a terrific ship and we look forward to showing you around the yard.

Placed on every start in 2020 bar his final run in the Cambridgeshire itself, he had kicked off last season at Yarmouth where he had the misfortune, in the compacted season that was 2020, to bump into a couple of extremely well handicapped horses in Maydanny, who in any other year would probably have been elsewhere, and Arigato, both of whom climbed the handicap rapidly thereafter. However, Balgair showed up really well, staying on nicely into third and followed this with another couple of good placed efforts before he ran here at home on the July course and again ran a blinder to finish third to the Godolphin horse, Ghaly.

Even though we sent him to try his luck at Bath he ran very well but didn’t really handle the track, nevertheless staying on for another creditable third. Having our eyes set on a step up in trip at Newmarket, he then ran at home again, this time on the Rowley Mile and, trained to the minute, by Tom Clover, Balgair cruised through the Cambridgeshire for amateur riders and quickened up well to storm home a very long looking six lengths in front (see full race in ’media’ above). A magical result and the 12/1 was the icing on the cake, his owners very pleased!!

Following this win, Balgair went on to race in the prestigious Cambridgeshire itself worth well over £150,000. Unfortunately Balgair hated the ground and the stormy weather made it an unenviable task for him. Nevertheless, he ran with great credit to finish in mid-division but, as indicated, the conditions were all against him – who knows what would have happened if they weren’t! However, as usual, Balgair stayed on right until the end, and did his Owners proud!

Balgair has already got his 2021 season off and running and ran in apprentice event at Ascot first time up. This will have blown away the cobwebs and we’re now looking to plot a course to the winners enclosure.

Despite now being 7 years of age, Balgair has raced on only 34 occasions making him quite a lightly raced sort. He has been placed in the first four no fewer than 21 times, winning five, at Newmarket twice, Sandown, Yarmouth and Brighton but, amazingly, his win for us last year was officially the best run of his career according to Raceform and The Racing Post, reaching an RPR (Racing Post Rating) of 93. Both Tom Clover and ourselves feel he can improve on that still. He is a strong, sound and genuine sort, just the type of horse you should be getting involved in. There is plenty of fun to be had with this game and consistent sort! He will, no doubt, provide his owners with tons of local fun and excitement once again in 2021. Get involved and join the fun as the country emerges from lockdown…

A New Dawn… To celebrate the end of restrictions, we’re providing all shareholders in Balgair a complimentary membership to the Newmarket Racing Club. Get involved, and ensure you have plenty to look forward to this year!
