Balgair is a comparatively lightly raced son of Australian stallion, Foxwedge (see full pedigree in ‘Pedigree’ above) and is the winner of six races notably here at Newmarket, both on the Rowley Mile and, also, on the July course. He is also a winner at Newmarket-by-the-Sea, better known as Great Yarmouth and, most recently, at another relatively local track, at Chelmsford. He is a flashy chestnut who is one of the most recognisable horses in the town. A real stable favourite and, previously, the winner of four races over 7f and a mile. In 2020, his first season with us, we plotted a course for him to be stepped up in trip, referred to by trainer, Tom Clover as a ‘stroke of genius’ and he duly won the Amateur riders version of the Cambridgeshire by no less than six lengths here at Newmarket, with his owners rewarded at the princely odds of 12/1. He subsequently ran, seven days later, in the Cambridgeshire itself but in atrocious conditions, and finished in midfield. Nevertheless, we were delighted that our plan had come to fruition and his Owners were very pleased with the outcome.

This opened a whole variety of new options for the son of Foxwedge and in 2021, after a pipeopener at Ascot, we aimed him at the £35,000 Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar. He ran an absolute stormer, beaten only three and a half lengths but, after a troubled passage which you can sometimes get in those big handicaps, he finished hard on the bridle, never able to get out of a pocket, into which he was locked for fully two and a half furlongs. Not beaten far at all, we were mortified but it convinced us that he does, indeed, have a decent prize in him and, as that race subsequently produced winner after winner, we feel sure that is still an option.

Balgair had a little break in the Summer due to a particularly nasty virus infection which affected the whole yard, but returned to the same Amateur Jockey’s Cambridgeshire again in September, where he had been successful the year before and, on this occasion, showed he was right back to his best when moving nicely into contention before lack of a recent outing told, finishing fourth.

We had seen enough, however, to know that he had more to offer and he was aimed at a decent little handicap at Chelmsford. We were confident that despite it being his first run on the all weather for four years, he would both handle it and show his best. He did so much more than that!!

Under a superb ride from Champion Jockey, Oisin Murphy, Balgair sat patiently, in behind, before Oisin produced him with a strong run to win by a comfortable three quarters of a length.

Oisin was very pleased with the horse, informing us he was difficult to pull up as he had plenty in reserve and he did the job well. A fabulous success for Balgair and a credit to the patience of his trainer, Tom Clover, and staff who nursed him back to full fitness – and another terrific result for his Owners.

We’re now looking forward to another exciting season with the chestnut in 2022 with so many options there are too many to name but he will continue to race at good tracks for decent prizemoney and is an owners dream. There are a few shares left in him and we would recommend him strongly.

Trained by Tom Clover at the historic, Kremlin House Stables, on the Fordham Road in Newmarket, he is an adorable sort and is both well built and incredibly sound.

Tom Clover follows, the late, great Michael Jarvis, Roger Varian and Simon Crisford as the master of Kremlin House and he has quickly forged an excellent reputation and, with his first winner at Glorious Goodwood under his belt, Tom, together with his wife, Jackie, daughter of Arc de Triomphe winning trainer, Michael Jarvis, have an operation that is really going places. Charming, welcoming and hugely hospitable, they run a terrific ship and we look forward to showing you around the yard.

Incredibly consistent, Balgair has won in each of his last four seasons and we have some very nice targets planned for him in 2022. These may include the Suffolk Stakes, worth £100,000 on Two Thousand Guineas day and another tilt at the Zetland Gold Cup, a handicap worth £35,000 last year and potentially more in 2022.

His most recent success on the polytrack at Chelmsford also provides plenty more options for him and we will be surprised if he doesn’t land a ‘big one’ in the new season. You can see some of his victories in ’media’ above. Seeing how cosily he has won, will give you some indication as to why we see more good things in the pipeline. Get involved and take a share in this most genuine and lovable gelding.

He may be an eight year old in 2022 but Balgair has raced on only 36 occasions making him quite a lightly raced sort. He has been placed in the first four no fewer than 21 times, winning six, including here at Newmarket twice, Sandown, Yarmouth, Brighton and Chelmsford but, amazingly, his win for us at Newmarket in 2020 was officially the best run of his career according to both Raceform and The Racing Post, reaching an RPR (Racing Post Rating) of 93. Both Tom Clover and ourselves feel he can improve on that still. He is a strong, sound and genuine sort, just the type of horse you should be getting involved in. There is plenty of fun to be had with this game and consistent sort! He will, no doubt, continue to provide his owners with tons of local fun and excitement so get involved and join the fun…
