Newmarket Racing Club are proud of Balgair’s gallant effort in the prestigious Cambridgeshire handicap yesterday at Newmarket Racecourse!
After his excellent success last week in the Amateur Jockey’s version of the Cambridgeshire, it was always going to be a tall order to ask him to back up that run with another within seven days – significant of course, that this horse has never ever run two races as close together in his career, and we couldn’t have asked him to do so in more contrasting conditions.
Balgair had shown no ill effects during the week but, on this occasion, he couldn’t replicate his dynamic run from the previous Saturday in such a huge and competitive field. Once again he appeared to be staying on again at the death and finished ahead of the well fancied pair of Haggas’ in Montatham and Sinjaari, but could never get near the eventual winner whose effort appeared a complete surprise to most!
Congratulations, of course, go to the Paul & Oliver Cole yard, Paul Hanagan, and all involved as Majestic Dawn won impressively and created a new course record in the process. A legacy of a very strong tailwind.
Whether it was the weather, the ground, the step up in grade or the relatively quick turnaround, we will of course be analysing further…
The main thing is that Balgair has returned safe and sound and it was so nice to see some of our Owners back on the track and enjoying a day at the racecourse, especially with a runner in the Cambridgeshire. Moreover, we know there are still plenty of exciting races ahead for Balgair!
