Balgair made a sparkling return to the all weather scene on Thursday as he won the final event on the card at Chelmsford City Racecourse, under a brilliant ride from Champion Jockey, Oisin Murphy.
After an abbreviated season on turf due to a nasty infection over the summer, Balgair had shown a glimmer of his old self last time at Newmarket when moving nicely into contention in the race he had won the previous year. We had seen enough to know that he had more to offer and with a decent amount of time to get over that promising run, we took Balgair to Chelmsford in the hope that despite it being his first run on the all weather for four years, we were confident he would handle it and show at the very least, promise for the future.
He did so much more than that!!
Oisin Murphy eased back behind the front runners into a stalking position in the early stages of the race, which he retained until rounding the home turn. At that point Balgair was extricated by the champ who came wide round the leaders with a strong run and was then sent on by his jockey who kept him up to his work but won a shade cosily by three quarters of a length.
Jockey, Oisin Murphy was very pleased with the horse telling us he was difficult to pull up as he had plenty in reserve and he did the job well.
This was, after all he had endured through the Summer, a fabulous success for Balgair and is a credit to the patience of his trainer, Tom Clover, and staff who nursed him back to full fitness. Owners and Members alike adore this 7yo and he rarely lets us down.
That’s three wins on the bounce for our horses and we still have another dice to throw on Friday…
