The Rowley Mile

The Classic Track

We are blessed to have two championship racecourses on our doorstep, the first of which is The Rowley Mile Racecourse. Steeped in history, having staged ‘Classic’ races since 1809 with a glittering array of winners including Sir Ivor, Brigadier Gerard, Nijinsky, Dancing Brave and Frankel, and combines style and formality with top class action.

This course has a one mile and two furlong straight, with minor undulations towards ‘The Bushes’ around two furlongs out.The penultimate furlong is downhill and the last is uphill, forming ‘The Dip’, referred to perpetually by media commentators. The first two Classics of each racing season, the One and Two Thousand Guineas, are run here, over a mile, in the Spring.

The Autumn features two of the biggest handicaps in the calendar; the ‘Cambridgeshire’ and the ‘Cesarewitch’ while the accent, generally, is firmly on youth with many of the country’s best, late maturing, two year olds making their debuts here. A series of two year old championship races, such as ‘The Dewhurst Stakes’ and the ‘Fillies Mile’, invariably provide the major players for the following season’s Classic races and, such is the popularity of the meeting housing those two events, it has recently been re-branded as the Dubai Future Champions Festival.

The majestic Millennium Grandstand, overlooks the finish and houses a number of lively eateries and bars, as well as the highly-sophisticated panoramic restaurant and exquisite private boxes.
