Churchill Rose was our latest addition to the string, a gorgeous 3yo filly by dual Two Thousand Guineas winner, Churchill, from a family full of winners…
Purchased at the record-breaking Guineas Breeze-Up sale, she is by the exciting second season stallion, Churchill, the winner of both the Two Thousand Guineas here at Newmarket and also the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. He was a champion 2yo winning five of his six races, indeed the only loss sustained was on debut and finished his first season winning the Group One, Dewhurst Stakes here at Newmarket, the fifth win of seven consecutive successes.
Stallion update…
An exciting stallion, himself by Galileo and who enjoyed a productive first season in 2021 he appears to be extracting significant improvement in his stock from two to three. This was illustrated perfectly by the quite brilliant success of Vadeni when winning the 2022 Prix Du Jockey Club (French Derby) (Grp 1), not only the stallion’s first stakes winner but also a first Classic Group ONE success. He duly followed when winning the Group One Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, beating multiple Group One winner, Mishriff. With the Group two success of Ladies Church adding to his haul he is presently Europe’s leading second crop sire.
In his first two races as a 3yo he won the Two Thousand Guineas here in Newmarket beating the subsequent St James Palace Stakes (Gp 1) winner, Godolphin’s Barney Roy before repeating the feat in the Irish equivalent beating Godolphin’s Thunder Snow before that colt subsequently won the Group One Prix Jean Prat in France. Churchill then finished a good second to Ulysses when tried over 10f in the Juddmonte International (Gp 1) and was unsuited by the heavy ground at Ascot in the QEII, at the backend. He was subsequently retired to stud.
His progeny appear to progress hugely with racing and both Tom Clover and, indeed, Charlie Fellowes have most promising types who finished second and third in the Epsom Derby trial earlier in the season with Grand Alliance desperately unlucky not to win at Royal Ascot. Needless to say, Charlie is a big fan of the stallion.
Our filly is out of an excellent winner producing mare in Market Day, formerly trained by Luca Cumani who won four races herself, and who has produced five winners from seven foals who raced including a dual Listed winner and Group placed filly in Carnachy who was trained by David Simcock. David also placed her to be third in a Group 3 and was only beaten three lengths in Speedy Boarding’s Group One, the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville. Another foal, Saucy Minx was also placed at Listed level and, now a broodmare has produced a 105 rated foal already. Indeed, there are good Black Type winners right through her extended family going back to Mutamam and even to Mtoto.
The filly has progressed well through the Summer, starring at a recent stable visit, the filly appears and never turned a hair, undoubtedly one of the benefits of going through the breeze up process. We are very excited to have acquired her, and especially with her excellent breeding potential, she has good residual value.
The filly is, of course, trained in the very same yard where her dam was trained, at Bedford House Stables on the Bury Road or Millionaires Row as it is sometimes referred to and, recently named has completed her first piece of work for the current encumbent, Charlie Fellowes who purchased the famous yard back in 2019. Significantly, Charlie has a real knack of getting the very best out of the fillies in his care and in 2021 he was responsible for the first two Group winners of his burgeoning career when both Eve Lodge and Vadream obliged at Group level. He has, additionally, won consecutive runnings of the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot and this gorgeous bay filly will be ideally suited to Charlie’s patient approach which has, quite obviously, proven very successful.
A good mover who showed a terrific willingness, really extending well and stretching out her neck in her breeze…
Charlie said after the sale “I am delighted with the filly. She should be just about perfect”.
We had been patiently waiting for the right horse to come along and, in a record breaking market, we were confident that our patience would be rewarded. It has been and we are absolutely delighted to have recruited this smashing looking filly.
In identifying her as our number one target, Charlie Fellowes, looking to add to his growing string had also identified her as a most likely proposition and is delighted to add her to the roster and is looking forward, immensely, to her 3yo season.
Naturally, she will race in the colours of the Newmarket Racing Club and although the syndicate is now closed, her shares selling remarkably swiftly, you will be able to follow her progress through this website.
It is intended that the filly will race for two seasons and then, dependent upon the wishes of the members of the syndicate, the filly will be sent to the sales at the end of her 3yo career whereupon her Owners may decide to sell their share or retain the filly for the rest of her career, whether on the racecourse or in the paddocks. This is always a personal choice but we feel it is important to provide the option to all members of the syndicate and the end of a filly’s 3yo career is the opportune time to do so.
